Pack 406 Pinewood Derby Rules
- Ground Rules and Competition
- You MUST use the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby car kit. The provided kit body, wheels, and
nails (axles) must be the minimum components used for the construction of
the car. You MUST use the pre-cut
locations of the axles. - Each scout may enter only one (1) car in the official competition. Several cars may be constructed, but
only one may be registered and raced.
Any other cars may be raced in the Open Class races. - The registered car must be built during the current school year in which the
Pinewood Derby is held. Cars that
have competed in a previous year may be race in the Open Class races. - If a car jumps the track, the race will be run again. If the same car jumps the track a second
time and does not interfere with its neighboring cars, the race will
count. If the car interferes with
its neighboring cars, at the discretion of the Race Official(s), the car
will be eliminated from that heat (It will receive a “did not finish” [DNF]
time) and the race will be run again without that car. - If a car becomes damaged and can be repaired in a reasonable amount of time
(a few minutes), the race will be run again. If not, the damaged car will be eliminated from that heat
and given a DNF time. - All rulings by the Race Marshall and racing staff are final.
- You MUST use the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby car kit. The provided kit body, wheels, and
- Car Length, Width and Clearance
- The maximum overall length shall not exceed 7 inches
- The maximum overall width (including wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2 ¾
(2.750) inches. - The minimum width between the wheels shall be 1 ¾ (1.750) inches so that the
car will clear the center guide strip on the track. - The minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and track surface shall
be 3/8 (0.375) inches. - The wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles) may not be changed
from the kit body distance of 4 ¼ (4.250) inches. (See Rule 1A above.) - All of the car must be behind the race track starting peg when placed in the
race track starting position.
- Car Weight and Appearance
- Car weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
The reading of the scale upon surrendering the car for entry will
be considered official and final.
The car may be hollowed out and build up to the maximum weight by
the addition of wood or metal ballast only, provided the ballast is
securely built into the car body or firmly affixed to it. No liquids or loose materials of any
kind are permitted in or on the car. - Details such as steering wheel, driver, spoiler decals, painting and interior
details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the
maximum length, width, and weight specifications and do not interfere
with racing in any way. - Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
- Car weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.
- Car Wheels and Axles
- Axles (nails) and wheels as provided by the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby
kit are ONLY to be used. No
third-party wheels and / or axles will be accepted. - Wheels may be lightly sanded to smooth out molding imperfections o the thread
area. The light sanding is the
only modification allowed.
Beveling, tapering, this sanding, wafering or lathe turning of the
wheels is prohibited. - Axles may not be altered in any way except for polishing.
- Wheel bearings, washers, bushings and hubcaps are prohibited.
- The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
- The car must be freewheeling, must clear the center guide rail, and not have
any starting device or other type of propulsion.
- Axles (nails) and wheels as provided by the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby
- Lubrication
- Only dry black graphite or white powdered Teflon will be allowed for
lubricating the wheels and axles. - NO LIQUID OIL or GREASE LUBRICANT may be used.
- Lubrication will not be allowed after the car has been weighed in or during the race.

- Cars of individuals not registered as Pack 406 Cub Scouts will race in the
Open Class. - Additional cars of Pack 406 Cub Scouts will race in the Open Class.
- Cars failing inspection prior to the race will be entered in the Open Class.
- Be creative, but follow the weight, width and clearance rules.
- Cars must not interfere with other cars on the track
- Cars must be freewheeling, gravity powered (no motors).
- Cars must follow the lubrication rules

Heidi – Membership Chair
As Membership Chair, Heidi is responsible for providing new families with applications and information about the pack and scouting. She also will assist the treasurer in collecting pack dues and handing out invoices. Heidi will also keep up to date records of scouts and families by making sure all training and forms are completed and on file.

2011 Pinewood Derby Jan 29
Our Pinewood Derby race will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Arapahoe Ridge cafeteria. Lunch consisting of a hot dog, chips, and soda will be available for purchase for $2.50. Plus we’ll have a bake sale!
10:00am – Setup
11:00am – Check-in (If your car does not meet the regulations (see Rules below), then it will be moved to the open class race.)
12:00pm - Races begin!
We are looking for donations of baked goods for the bake sale. Please drop them off at 10:00am during setup so we’ll be ready to go at 11:00am.

December Pack Meeting – Holiday Party
Our December Pack meeting will be our Holiday Party on Wednesday,
Dec 15th, 2010, 7pm at the Arapahoe Ridge Elementary School cafeteria.
Each scout should bring a wrapped gift (max $5) for a gift exchange. Siblings can bring one too!
Nov 17th Pack Meeting @ ARE
Safety and Awareness
Our Pack Meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov 17th, 7:00pm, at the ARE cafeteria. This meeting will focus on Youth Protection Training, specifically bullying and how to deal with it on the boy’s level.
Bring your popcorn money if you have it.
Pinewood Derby cars will be handed out! Free to Pack 406 Cub Scouts; $5 each for parents/siblings who can race in the open class race.
